@ezekiel listen to people who are (not by any means incorrectly) focused on safer street designs and they often just ignore this factor.

@TechConnectify @ezekiel As someone whose organization is in the road safety biz, there is definitely an emphasis both on distracted driving *and* on safer street design, but those are often advocated for by different groups with different focuses (behaviour vs. environment).

@TechConnectify @ezekiel I would argue that designing a street to be safe would at the same time make distracted driving if not impossible then at least a non-issue.

Places where you would expect people to be on foot need to be made in a way where the expectations isn't for cars to be able to use it as a thoroughfare. If there are to be lanes for cars, they should be narrow and restricted enough where you literally couldn't use an electronic device without running your car into a bollard.

@relevantworm @TechConnectify @ezekiel
Agreed. It is usually not stated so, but I think the rise in distracted driving is partly because driving is too easy- everything is smooth, automatic and it doesn't feel dangerous. I literally couldn't use a smartphone while driving because I drive an old manual transmission without cruise control, blind spot warnings, etc. Even in smooth freeway driving I'm always actively driving the car and can't do anything else.
We need driving in pedestrian areas to always be an active process where it feels dangerous to not give your full attention. Taking away active control of the vehicle doesn't free up human attention for hazards, it lulls us into putting our activity elsewhere. (Or to sleep)

@relevantworm @TechConnectify @ezekiel In Fairfax City, they put in traffic calming features on a road that is used as a cut through. Unfortunately people are so inpatient they will just barrel through or go over the curbs of the traffic calming features! 😬
