@AudraTran You should absolutely insulate the attic, sure.

But around here? Nothing ever goes up there. It's strictly storage if anything.

We mostly run ductwork through the floors. If you have a finished basement, that's essentially zero energy waste. If it's unfinished, some heat is needed anyway so the minimal losses are fine and useful.

How this isn't standard practice everywhere is beyond me.

Out here in California, most houses are built slab on grade, so there isn't an under floor space in which to put ducts. That leaves in the walls (which costs floor space) or above the ceiling (which costs energy). You can bet you know which one builders prefer. I suspect a lot of the in-attic stuff in older homes is retrofitting to homes built before AC (or central heat) was common, so they're shoving it in wherever they can make it fit.
