Well, last night's thread sure was (and continues to be) a wild ride.

I'll be blunt here: please believe me that I'm experiencing problems frequently enough to make me not like this place. And **please** try to understand how a repeated onslaught of suggestions on how I myself need to solve those problems doesn't give me much solace.

If I have to be responsible for managing this with whatever tools or strategies you throw at me just to be here happily, that's not something I need in my life.

@TechConnectify I recognize (and agree) that you believe that, bluntly put, catering to 'important people' like yourself is important to for the ecosystem to gain critical mass. It is probably hard for you to express this, running the risk sounding like an entitled douche. Thank you for putting yourself out there nonetheless.

Would you be willing to make available resources to implement any concrete improvement that you have? That's the most pragmatic approach to getting things done.

Technology Connections

@guusdk you're right that it's hard for me to express this delicately. I hope I've done a decent job.

To answer your question - I would, yes - on the condition that I need to believe that my concerns actually matter.

Between some of the hostility towards popular people here and the general way the platform works right now, I don't yet see it.

@TechConnectify you will never get broad consensus on anything, and there will always be a nontrivial sized group of people that are hostile, rather than disagreeing with you politely. Waiting for that to change is fruitless.

It is a small group of people that ultimately decide if your suggestions go in or not. You can trust them to make decisions for the greater good of the ecosystem. If this is important, then go ahead and take pragmatic steps to enable them. I am willing to pitch in myself.

Hypothetically, @thisismissem would it be possible to hire you to work on this? ☝️ (Thread context: notification/reply filtering, possibly based on sentiment analysis, to help with the usability of notifications for large accounts)

Context for @guusdk, @TechConnectify: Emelia is a freelancer with a track record of getting features into mainline Mastodon and an interest in fedi moderation/t&s tooling, which feels adjacent to this. She's been looking for people willing to fund this kind of work.

@julian @guusdk @TechConnectify it's a bit out of my wheel-house, as I normally just work on the streaming server, admin moderation tools, and a bit on the OAuth stuff.

I'd probably say in this case it'd be better to drive funding towards Mastodon gGmbH (the non-profit behind the project) instead of me, even though I do need the money.

I am participating a bit in a few discussions that have happened around this thread though.

@thisismissem @guusdk @TechConnectify For clarity, I'm not offering to pay - I have neither a personal stake in notification filtering nor the spare 💵. But I figure if the offer is sincere, it might be possible to connect people willing to fund this feature with people eager to work on it.

I can't imagine Eugen would have any kind of principled stance against it, I mean he has 340k followers himself, I assume he would enjoy having a more useful notification view. 🙂

@julian @guusdk @TechConnectify I'm aware of a few things vaguely planned/discussed, but it's not particularly my area of focus right now.

But Mastodon gGmbH definitely does need more funding to pay the people currently working for it & to hire more engineers, designers & product managers
