ok so this might be dumb but - does it matter what server we choose? Like I am on mas.to but does that mean anything in terms of what I see or can post on and engage with?

I was looking through other servers here mastodon.social/ and my brain is like "ooooh i wanna be part of all of them" lol - can someone help me wwrap my head around this?

@alexdobrenko I was the same. Apparently it doesn't matter which server yer on. I'll see if I can find the explanation...

@alexdobrenko Well I’m not 100% sure yet as I only joined about 30 minutes ago 😂. The feedback I’ve got though is you can see and reply to anyone no matter the server.

@alexdobrenko Ooo! I actually saw something about this earlier today.

The short answer is yes. The longer answer is, it probably depends on the size of the server you're on.

@alexdobrenko
The server (instance) does affect what you see to some extent but they are mainly like gateways to the network.

@alexdobrenko scroll through the federated feed. You can also have multiple accounts

@alexdobrenko From what I can tell, it only matters to the clients people use. When your mas.to people click on "local", they will see your posts. When you click on "local" you will see only mas.to posts. If you, or they click on "Federated", you will see the Twitter-like firehose. That's my understanding.

@alexdobrenko the fediverse is decentralized on different projects. Mastodon is only one little part of the fediverse nad you can be part of all, regardless on which server you are. Follow hashtags and you will see other fro all over the world on all projects.
All projects that can communicate which each other are using the Activity Pub (AP) protocol like Friendica, Hubzilla, Pleroma, Misskey, PeerTube, Funkwhale, Pixelfed, Nextcloud and many more. And Mastodon 😀
