Microsoft and Salesforce are both launching “autonomous agents” for their CRM products which promise to perform tasks like sending emails, qualifying leads or tracking expenses on behalf of accountants, salespeople and customer support agents without supervision.
While I think this branding is overkill, I do think this is the sweet spot of AI as productivity tool.
AI as junior employee or intern that does grunt work in a constrained field that humans then review.

@carnage4life so this will justify firing the junior employees and do fuck all to train future senior employees. what other disadvantages do you see?

@carnage4life That’s pretty well aligned with what I’ve seen. That said, an intern where you have to review every single piece of work in detail (because you can’t trust that they won’t randomly mess up) isn’t a productivity boost, they’re an investment in their future more helpful selves. Until something comes out that can consistently provide correct output, it’s useless for anything that requires accuracy in the details (e.g. accounting).
@carnage4life It's unclear whether properly reviewing a piece of work is substantially more productive than actually doing the work. Especially when you have to check for basic screw-ups a human with common sense would never do.
