Texas scientists’ new Covid-19 vaccine is cheaper, easier to make and patent-free

Dr Maria Bottazzi says their vaccine, called Corbevax, is unique because they do not intend to patent it

@cubicgarden I'm here hoping that doesn't happen to it the same thing that happened to the insulin.

@cubicgarden then she should publich it completely to prevent others from patenting it!

@ljwrites sadly that just means someone else will patent something very similar

@LovesTha only if they can prove non-obviousness in light of prior art

@cubicgarden See also (and a few other initiatives that fizzled out that I can't find a link for)

The problem with patents is that as an inventor you can't know if something is "patent-free", only that _you_ didn't claim a patent on the whole or any part of it. That doesn't mean that there isn't some patent by somebody else that you're already infringing with your invention.

There have been some wild events around media codecs (MP3, MPEG4, ...) based on this nasty property of the patent system.

@cubicgarden if the first patent free vax comes from texas thats pretty bizarre
