“It’s direct, indisputable, empirical evidence that this kind of common claim that ‘the only thing that stops a bad guy with the gun is a good guy with the gun’ is wrong."

In short, Ted Cruz and anyone else who makes this claim is wrong or lying.

@baldur I like this. For most people it is enough, and I imagine a folder-based CMS, possibly with sym links, would work well.

California achieved over 99% of demand met by renewable energy for the first time at the end of April weekend. While the availability of sunshine will go up over the summer, so too will the demand for air conditioning, so this achievement isn’t currently sustainable.

@EU_Commission I guess the issue is that Apple Pay is the only wallet that can use the Secure Enclave on the iPhone. Access for other developers would have to be heavily scrutinized since that is the key to iPhone security. Password managers are on iOS, but they don’t use the Secure Enclave. Loyalty cards are also allowed via apps.

Can Musk stand up to China?

If he does, it'll be the first time..."

Whereas Mastodon is a social media / microblogging platform, there are other federated sites that offer different uses.

#PeerTube: like YouTube, an open source replacement for video hosting
#FunkWhale: Like SoundCloud, for music
#Bookwyrm: Like Goodreads
#Pixelfed: like Instagram, offers image galleries

All of these, including Masto, can talk to each other - so you can create an account on a Bookwyrm instance to keep track of your reading, and people on Masto can follow it! 🤯

@thetasbane i think there is a wide range of uses. I have 5k followers there and have sent DMs to maybe 20 people over 11 years. But journalists live by it. Maybe for professionals, too. It’s easier than using the old 140 char format. With 500 char it might not be as important.

Welcome to Mastodon and thanks to any new followers.

I hope you give the place a good chance. There's a bit of a learning curve but it's well worth it.

For new accounts, I recommend checking out @feditips

They've been posting all day to help new accounts adjust to the platform.

@RiverEnodian no, you can’t even.

J/k, you can do whatever you want. You know you the best.

@vgnpwr how well does that work as a kick toy? I guess what I’m really asking is how long does it last haha!

Hi! mastodon.social is being slow right now, as far as I can tell because there's twice as many people using it at the same time as ever have; I'm working on making it go fast again, but in the meantime, do remember to invite people to joinmastodon.org instead of directly to mastodon.social. People don't have to be on the same server to follow you! Thanks!

@RiverEnodian yes, definitely. It might not be best to take before a video game session. That stuff is already designed to keep your focus.
