With Trump reportedly planning to end the IRS Direct File program, there's no better time to remember how TurboTax owner Intuit spent two decades fighting to prevent Americans from filing their taxes online for free.

Israel is starving 2.3 million people.
Read it again. Let it sink in. Don't look away.
Israel is starving 2.3 million people.
How many Israeli lives are worth starving 2.3 million people? What's the math that makes this OK?
This has nothing to do with Hamas. It has nothing to do with the hostages. It has to do with Starving. Two. Million. People.
If you can't acknowledge this, then Hamas isn't the monster, you are.

If your rights depend on who wins the next election, you don’t have rights.
I've been making the common mistake of calling the slave-labor-and-torture facility in El Salvador a "prison" when, in fact, the correct expression is "U.S.-supported concentration camp" or "U.S.-supported gulag" -- and will use the accurate language going forward.
I urge you to do likewise.

A feel-good story in the news today...
Residents of all ages in a small Michigan community formed a human chain and helped a local bookshop move each of its 9,100 books – one by one – to a new storefront about a block away.https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/apr/17/book-brigade-us-town-forms-human-chain-to-move-9100-books-one-by-one
The “book brigade” of about 300 people stood in two lines running along a sidewalk in downtown Chelsea on Sunday, passing each title from Serendipity Books’ former location directly to the correct shelves in the new building, down the block and around the corner on Main Street.
“It was a practical way to move the books, but it also was a way for everybody to have a part,” Michelle Tuplin, the store’s owner, said. “As people passed the books along, they said ‘I have not read this’ and ‘that’s a good one’.”
Tuplin said the endeavour took just under two hours – much shorter than hiring a moving company to box and unbox the thousands of titles. The brigade even put the books back on the shelves in alphabetical order.
BlueSky isn’t just censoring posts in Turkey to match government demands, already happening in other countries too.
I really wish the media would stop calling it decentralised. It isn’t. It’s like calling Shell oil nature lovers, because they claim they love nature.
A preliminary budget draft leaked to the Washington Post outlines plans by the Trump administration to cut:
- the NIH budget by 40%
- the CDC budget by 44%
- the HHS budget by 33%
This will not make America healthy. It will make Americans sicker and more vulnerable to disease outbreaks.
Chris Krebs has quit his job at SentinalOne to launch a legal and public relations fight against Trump and the presidential memo Trump he signed against Krebs last week. "Krebs said he understood why some have kept a low profile and tried not to further anger the president. But he said he disagreed with that approach. "I don’t think this lay-low-and-hope-this-blows-over approach is the right one for the moment we’re in."
Miles Taylor who was also targeted by Trump said "the memos targeting him and Krebs were 'punishment for dissent' and that he too planned to fight back.... 'How we respond will set the tone inevitably for how others targeted by these EOs decide to respond.”

RFK Jr saying the quiet part out loud…
In an article about autism, he talks about how autistic people will never pay taxes, hold a job, go on a date etc. “worthless”. Useless eaters.
This is straight up eugenics.
It’s also wrong. Many people with autism or disabilities can do ALL these things, but our worth should not be predicated on that.
Everyone has intrinsic value regardless of economic ability or contribution.
Pretty sunset to share with my masto friends tonight. You all make my life better. Thanks for sharing yourselves and your thoughts and your ideas and your crafts and your art and your highs and your lows and your pets and your shit posts and your photos.

‘Because of the prospect of indefinite detention and the lack of due process the Trump administration has afforded the people it has sent to CECOT, experts who spoke to TPM said the facility could be more accurately described as a “concentration camp,” “penal colony,” or “permanent prison camp.”’ https://talkingpointsmemo.com/where-things-stand/trump-is-sending-people-to-the-camps
Thank you to everybody who sent me the news stories and posts about the hacked crosswalk buttons in Silicon Valley and Seattle. Maybe we'll see them elsewhere, too, soon? I'm betting there may be other cities who's DOT chose weak passwords for systems like this.
If you haven't heard what's up, I did a super short video about this...
Seriously I don’t know either, man. Maybe someone white in Congress should do something other than send fundraising emails.
Possibly the weirdest planet yet discovered?
Newfound world 2M1510 (AB) b appears to orbit not one but two stars...and they are actually failed stars, known as brown dwarfs...and the planet orbits sideways, in a unique up-and-down polar orbit.

It's been a rough day. I can only handle fun #dog videos like this one.

The blacksmith put her hammer down. The apprentice had been dealing with a walk-in but wanted a word. “She wants us to do, what, boy?”
“Transplant an enchantment from a sword to a spade.”
“Why on Krull would someone want an enchanted spade?”
“Adventurer wants to retire to grow roses. Sword wants to retire, too.”
“Tell her okay. Goddess, we get all the weird jobs on Grunedays.”
“I think they’re sweet, boss”
I find the way RFK Jr talks about autism to be really disturbing. He refers to the existence of neurodiversity like it's an illness. It is not.
These folks just can't stand variety in any form.
