Next #BikeNite is this Friday at 4pm Pacific daylight time (UTC-7)
This is our weekly call for questions. Reply with any you'd like me to add to the discussion on Friday. Please add the BikeNitePQ hashtag so it's easier to find a Proposed Question. There is room for 4-5 more.
(BikeNite is a Q&A type discussion on the Fediverse.)
@pete @ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite AFAIK, not everyone did the whole thing, I think it was an informal race as well. People found out via word of mouth, it was mainly promoted on Instagram & locally, etc. Also 260 miles with over 20k feet of elevation, much of it on dirt, under 36 hours is not for the average cyclist lol.

@w8emv @ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite You might want to check out the Priority Bicycles 600 series. The base comes pretty close to what you mentioned. #bikenite
@ascentale @NNN @bikenite Any distance up to about a 5 minute walk, I’ll walk since it’s not worth the extra time to secure the bike. #bikenite
It's finally spring weather in Northern MN. I've had a couple rides in my new (to me) recumbent trike. It has 20" wheels all around. I've tended to look down on small wheels-- now I don't know why. Along with my 26/20 Vision and 650bX2 Volae, it has me pining (a little) for an old Rans Rocket. Is anyone else discovering delight in small wheels?
We cover our cities in tar and we fill them with smoke. Car oriented design turns our public space into a toxic shithole
@ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite A8: another thing I’ll probably never do again: Endurance Racing, like the “around the (SF) Bay” mountain bike race that is currently underway:

@CiaraNi This whole thread + comments is delightful!
@etp @ascentale @bikenite The sound came from ahead and above so I looked where my ears told me to look. Yay senses!
@ascentale @NNN @bikenite A8. At home, I walk to the grocery store store down the street and back for “little” things (will fit in a shoulder bag, or my back pack). 1km. I’ll hike 12 to 15, generally places that I wouldn’t ride (assuming I had the proper bike). Biking is generally fitness/pleasure, or to the gym. #BikeNite

I used to walk a couple of miles from the Boston Back Bay to my work in Cambridge MA- there were too many crashes caused by cars on the bridge across the river. Sigh.
Bike infrastructure is much better in Boston and Cambridge now, so I ride everywhere when I visit.
@ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite A5. I certainly don’t need another bike. But I’ve always wanted a Bianchi in Celeste green (not the new carbon ones that just have Celeste highlights). #BikeNite
#BikeNite A8: The closest big grocery store is 1km from our front door, and a second one is 1.5km. I don't mind walking that distance, but don't care to walk back hauling groceries. I've hopped on the bike to buy just a few items, but I can't really carry enough in the panniers; see my previous answer about an N+1 bakfiets. I suppose I could go out more often to pick up smaller hauls, which is not such a bad idea.

5- I haven't owned a mountain bike in ages, though a gravel might fit the bill; I'm not interested in real rough terrain, but "not paved" I'd like to be able to do. #BikeNite

3- I acquired a carbon fiber road bike, need to get it into riding condition, then if I like it, sell my older aluminum road bike, or replace both road bikes altogether with something softer, 25mm tire @ 10 psi is HARD!
4- sidegrade: I have a recumbent trike, but to make wet days easy, I don't know if a velomobile would be better or not. No clue how I'd move it; my existing catrike explorer requires disassembly to fit into my sportwagen

@ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite A5: My desires...
1- Upgrade: current commuter ebike (rad power mini 2019) is just too small for me.
2- fill in gap: I have owned a series of folding bikes to keep in the car trunk (park in the "10 block far away" free lot...), but none were particularly good. Finding folding handlebars that aren't "loose" is very difficult. #BikeNite cont'd...
@nothingfuture @realSiegfried @clhenrick @ascentale @MartyCormack @bikenite Well, at least here in California, it's law that you need a brake. I have acquaintances who've received tickets for it. In places with hills, I'd say it's a requirement. but it's safer to have a front brake, in case your feet slip off the pedals. Stopping with both wheels (particularly the front) is faster than with merely one (rear) wheel. #BikeNite
