The Ranty Highwayman

In the April edition of Highways Magazine I ask for a reinvigoration of national research projects, with an independent commissioning body. We're missing out on spreading good practice.

The digital edition is free as ever.

@RantyHighwayman well put, this is a multi-sectoral problem not just transport. e.g. NHS Estates used to develop estates guidance but this is basically stopped now. I’ve heard the view it’s for industry / the market to step in. That wont happen. Evaluation in the built environment sector is severely lacking despite Green/Magenta Book requirements. Major investments should be subject to outcome evaluations including population level health/wellbeing outcomes IMO. …

@RantyHighwayman At a project level I’d like to see evaluation better embedded just as good project management should be at project level. For sectoral level research, despite the good words research isn’t being translated into practice guidance at scale, this needs addressed. Can’t see it being centralised by government & academia could but wont do this. So yes that’s an opportunity for a public/academic/industry partnership. My own answer was do a PhD & start a research led practice.

@healtharch @RantyHighwayman I especially hate that a NHS trust's agents argue that they won't provide bike parking when building a big multistorey car park because they're not legally required to. Also, they plan for 1% growth in cycling over 4 years, which won't meet the national target of 500% growth of urban cycle trips in 8 years.
