@TechConnectify I don't think you can even mention people on lemmy there's no way for anyone to pull you into conversations you don't want, even nested replies don't notify you. I'm guessing it must have been someone using different software, participating in a lemmy discussion, and then... well I have no idea how the notifications work from there.
Cross paradigm federation is something I don't have any interest in, but some people seem to be really into it.

You can mention people on Lemmy, you can direct message people on Lemmy you will get notifications on both. Lemmy has plenty of additional issues as well.
As you said, this is all an iteration which requires further improvement.
