The DOJ’s proposed remedies to address Google’s search monopoly are far reaching and will definitely reshape the internet

- Google forced to sell Chrome
- Android can no longer promote Google Search
- Banned from default search deals on iPhones and other devices (Apple just lost $20B/year)
- Must license search index data to competitors

My former coworkers at Bing must be ecstatic.

AP News · DOJ seeks to break up Google, force Chrome sale as monopoly punishmentBy MICHAEL LIEDTKE

@carnage4life Right, but what are the chances all that gets reversed in two months?

@mattdm @louis @carnage4life I’m sure Elon thinks buying the spun off Chrome for cheap and and later getting the default placement restriction struck down as ‘unconstitutional’ by a pet judge is a great deal.

@carnage4life Apple has switched to our Pennsylvania based DuckDuckGo. It’s private & secure. In all, a much better experience too.

@carnage4life Yikes. Any word on if this affects Firefox?

@carnage4life that worked so well with Microsoft 2 decades ago

@carnage4life I wonder if the Firefox deal is also dead.

@carnage4life I wonder how Chrome will be monetized. Building an open-source browser does not make them any money (directly), influence over web standards and promoting their services through a unified platform does.

Ironically, if they don't forbid search deals, maybe Google would have to pay Chrome to stay the default engine. If they do, Mozilla will almost certainly be having a hard time, given that it's still a huge chunk of their income.

@carnage4life it'd be worth a whole lot more if they finally and effectively broke up the microsoft monopoly.
