ICANN should institute rent control for domain names https://merveilles.town/@makeworld/110746913903153042
And a vacancy tax on domain speculators.
Or just a special tax on the company that snagged my domain when I couldn't afford to renew it for a while and now wants thousands of dollars to give it back.
@spinningmind @mcc How does one define vacancy? Am I going to have to pay more money because there's no A record on the root of my domain?
@astraleureka Mostly a joke but my off the cuff answer is that if it's for sale then we assume it's being speculated on.
@spinningmind @mcc You can implement your own tax by messing with their sales drones periodically.
Like my vanity domain I registered in 1998 or so, and lost when I was homeless in the mid-2000s. These dumb fucks have been holding it since, and keep trying to convince me (probably the only person ever interested in it) it's worth $30,000.
So every couple years, I hit them up. Justify that price to me. I'll give ya twenty bucks. We almost settled on $300 last time, but I don't care that much.
