An interesting article on the benefits of restricting motor-vehicle traffic in cities, specifically looking at the changes in Paris.

I just discovered a brilliant #carfree hack for travelling by #transit to cottage country north of #kingstonon . Avis rent-a-car in Kingston will leave a car at the station and the keys at the front desk for you to pick up. No need to suffer the #401highway!
I really only need three #bicycles. I need one ebike for my utility transportation needs, one fitness bicycle to burn calories, and one bicycle to be an emergency backup, which I would prefer to be a non-e bike. I would *like* to also have a second ebike identical to the first one, but that's just for convenience—I'd keep that one with Winter tires, since I am #CarFree and ride year-round.
I don’t get it. Does he think people are driving to Deptford High Street to frequent our local coffee shops, pubs, and everything shops? Like genuinely. I don’t get it.
My local council has announced plans to pedestrianise the high street near me. The high street in question is already closed 3 days a week for about 8h. The proposal is to extend the pedestrianisation to 7 days a 8h a day.
Bear in mind, this is inner #London. There are already 3 different stations on 4 different lines within a 5m walk (and more within 15m) plus multiple bus routes.
Based on the above, how do you expect the local #Green party candidate for parliament is reacting?

Many people would agree that it's absurd that children in the USA wear bulletproof vests to school, and are trained how to behave in an event of a shooting. The same people see nothing absurd in their own children wearing safety vests to school, and being trained how not to murdered by oversized trash cans on wheels.
Making the most of my new environs amidst *gestures at dumpster fire*.
Did some bikepacking in the Oakland hills. Sibley Volcanic Regional Preserve.
New blog post: on protests, nearing 3 years car-free, my birthday, and, of course, gardening https://astoneintheriver.net/2025/04/06/energize/ #gardening #protest #resistance #carfree
..., student housing, #rewilding spaces, a #carfree campus and improved public transport. These ideas will be developed further over time by some of the participants.
There appears to be support to implement a student + staff #CitizenAssemby and we have started to figure out what it entails, which weaknesses to overcome, and how to get there.
Stay tuned!

Would be great to have fewer cars around, wouldn't it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEFBn0r53uQ #carsruincities #carfree #carfreeholyroodpark #holyroodpark #edinburgh
Fun but rather windy walk along the Great Highway and Ocean Beach today in San Francisco with the husky. Walked over 4 car free miles up and down the whole stretch. So amazing that the city is making this former stretch of highway a public park, and filling it with art and other fun things for people to enjoy.
The Great Highway, welcome to @TheWarOnCars
I think I spotted where the #LNP got the idea to reduce the fuel excise.
It's a One Nation (#ONP) policy, except they're proposing doing it for longer.
> Halve the fuel excise to 26 cents per liter for 3 years with a review after 12 months, with the option to extend further.

Seems a reasonable proposal on the surface… BUT:
1. it'll take a while for it to make a difference to those who don't actually pay a fuel excise (e.g. the #carfree community and the #ev community)
2. you risk putting greater demand on fossil fuels, which given the meagre reserves we have and the impact emissions are having on our #climate, seems like a bad choice
Maybe the fuel excise should be going into projects that improve the green space and help offset some of these emissions?
A suburb of Phoenix is not where one might expect to see a residential development based on emancipation from the dominion of the car.
Reducing car dependency in Arizona matters beyond the borders of the state. All too often those working for more human and environmentally sound planning and transit policies in the USA are met with a simplistic and thought stopping cry of "It might work in Europe, but our geography makes it impossible!"
