G Dan Mitchell<p>“Sandhill Crane Flying Low” — A lesser sandhill crane flies low above a Central Valley field. </p><p>I had been trying to find the right time to head to California’s Central Valley to photograph migratory birds again. I was last there around New Year’s Day, but since then various things have kept me away — mostly that the times I ‘ve been free were the times when my favorite foggy conditions were not in place. I finally gave up on waiting and went on a sunny day. G Dan Mitchell<p>“Old Tree at Dawn” — An old wetlands tree silhouetted against winter dawn sky and dissipating fog. </p><p>This may be the last in the string of photographs from my three days in the Central Valley landscape around New Year’s Day. But no promises — there could be more if I dig back into the raw file archives from that trip. Funny story: When I return from shoots like that I often fear that I didn’t come back with much interesting work. But then, after I start digging into the material, I inevitably find quite a bit of work that I like. I have some theories about why this happens, and at some point I’ll expand on them…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/20/old-tree-at-dawn/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/20/ol</span><span class="invisible">d-tree-at-dawn/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/fog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fog</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscape" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>landscape</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/trees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>trees</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
G Dan Mitchell<p>“Wetlands Sunrise” — Morning sun rising thruogh tule fog and reflected in Central Valley wetlands. </p><p>Bird photography is my excuse for going to this place in the winter months, but this winter landscape is the main attraction. G Dan Mitchell<p>“Wetlands, Dawn Light and Fog” — Drifting fog obscures the distant view at dawn in Central Valley wetlands. </p><p>Yes, another foggy Central Valley morning landscape. What can I say? The subject is often on my mind this time of year. While it isn’t always that attractive in the summer, during the winter months this landscape is transformed by the arrival of migratory birds, the appearance of seasonal ponds, and the tule fog. The latter obscures some of the more mundane elements of this landscape and produces a mysterious, moody atmosphere…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/12/wetlands-dawn-light-and-fog-2/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/02/12/we</span><span class="invisible">tlands-dawn-light-and-fog-2/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/wetlands" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wetlands</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/dawn" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dawn</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/fog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fog</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscapephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>landscapephotography</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>

Michael Crews<p>“A decision to take summer water from local farmers and dump it out of these reservoirs shows a complete lack of understanding of how the system works and sets a very dangerous precedent,” said Dan Vink, a longtime Tulare County water manager and principal partner at Six-33 Solutions, a water and natural resource firm in Visalia.</p><p><a href="https://mas.to/tags/Trump" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Trump</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Water" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Water</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/California" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>California</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/CentralValley" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>CentralValley</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Tule" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Tule</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Kaweah" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Kaweah</span></a> <a href="https://mas.to/tags/Success" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Success</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sjvwater.org/trumps-emergency-water-order-responsible-for-water-dump-from-tulare-county-lakes/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">sjvwater.org/trumps-emergency-</span><span class="invisible">water-order-responsible-for-water-dump-from-tulare-county-lakes/</span></a></p>

G Dan Mitchell<p>“Wetlands Birds, Dawn Fog” — Black-necked stilts and other wetland birds in a quiet pond as dawn fog begins to thin. </p><p>Believe it or not, I still have more photographs from our three days of photography around New Year’s Day. To recap, a group of friends and fellow photographers assembled before dawn to greet the first sunrise of the new year. We spent the rest of the day sharing food and good times and photographing this landscape and its wildlife…continues: <a href="https://gdanmitchell.com/2025/01/31/wetlands-birds-dawn-fog/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">gdanmitchell.com/2025/01/31/we</span><span class="invisible">tlands-birds-dawn-fog/</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://sfba.social/tags/centralvalley" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>centralvalley</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>birds</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/landscapephotography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>landscapephotography</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/fog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fog</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/sunrise" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>sunrise</span></a> <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/photography" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>photography</span></a></p>
