C.We're a week into April here on the Canadian prairies [1], but it's a little different than other places. Spring isn't here, it's on the horizon. Everything's still got a blanket of snow on it, and we could easily get more [2]. There's no blooms or buds to tell you spring is on the way.There are really only two big clues that Old Man Winter is thinking about leaving:1. Days are noticeably longer than just a few weeks ago.2. The jackrabbits!They're turning brown again, losing their winter-white coat. Unfortunately it's kind of ruining their camouflage.I find it interesting that the degree or progression of the change is so different between different individuals. I'm told the change is triggered by the lengthening days, so it's some sort of built-in variance.These are white-tailed jackrabbits, which are actually a species of hare, not rabbit. They're the most common hare on the Canadian prairies, shown here in my backyard.[1] It's probably a week into April where you are, too. Because it is the foundation of unix and hence the BSDs which i quite like in practice and spirit. There is a whole implication here that i realize is not overt. C has a lot of negatives. But the positives currently outweigh the negatives. The shortcut reasoning being that C is what 90% (made up figure) of the software that I like is made in. And the other 8% (made up figure) of the software I like (common lisp, golang etc.) is written in C. So it's in the foundation no matter how you look at it. C is a lingua franca. As i grow older I move from idealism to more practical stances like context matters and "you have to get _there_ from _here_". Don't take this as a dismissal of idealism, but I mean it as combining idealism with other things. I am warming up to rust from this perspective. I would prefer a simpler compiled language as a lingua franca, but in the notion of C above, rust seems to be becoming the lingua franca for compiles and/or systems languages. Unknowns: Is there any emerging language franca for retro and/or embedded systems? Is it just C and leave it at that? Is rust not really a lingua franca but only appears that way to me because of the bubbles i am in? Maybe rust is good for lower power systems, because it's the compiler that needs the power, not the binaries it produces? So it would be reasonable to assume a higher power machine for development purposes only. (aside: Higher Power Machine :P) Ideally I like a language like Hare for systems programming. (Using 'systems loosely.) If you can't tell I have been spending time learning rust, but feel a little conflicted about it.
