magnetichuman<p>I can't help but see parallels between this voyage and the voyage to England of Count Dracula in Bram Stoker's novel, on a ship containing boxes of earth from his home country, and its dramatic arrival in Whitby. Could Bram Stoker have heard this fishy story and been inspired to create a similar scene in his book? The part that gets me is the name on the box - "Dr. Ackland" - could this name have inspired the name of the world's most famous vampire?</p><p> (2/2)</p><p><a href="https://morethanadodo.com/2015/10/23/its-offishal/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">morethanadodo.com/2015/10/23/i</span><span class="invisible">ts-offishal/</span></a></p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/naturalhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>naturalhistory</span></a><br><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/dracula" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dracula</span></a><br><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/bramstoker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bramstoker</span></a><br><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/gothichorror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gothichorror</span></a></p>
magnetichuman<p>Did a fish inspire one of the most famous works of gothic horror literature? A pet theory of mine.</p><p>In 1847 a ship bound from the Mediterranean to England is caught in a terrible storm in the Bay of Biscay. The crew are supersitious that a mysterious, coffin-like box on board the ship could be the cause of their bad fortune. The box bears only the address of an Oxford academic - could it be a cadaver bound for the doctor's dissection table? Soon the crew are demanding for the box to be opened. The carpenter removes the fastenings from the box, opens the lid and reveals ... a large Tuna packed in salt. </p><p>(1/2)</p><p><a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/naturalhistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>naturalhistory</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/dracula" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>dracula</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/bramstoker" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bramstoker</span></a> <a href="https://cupoftea.social/tags/gothichorror" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>gothichorror</span></a></p>

Christopher CooksonOver 70% of earth's surface is covered in water, but probably over 99% of photographs are taken in air.<br> This is the first time I've ever seen or managed to photograph a member of the Sphaeromatidae family of isopods, in a shallow rock pool.<br> It's also the first time I've seen an active limpet, rather than as they usually appear, inert, clamped to rocks while the tide is out.<br> The stripy tentacle like appendages are fascinating.<br> <br> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/photography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#photography</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/underwaterphotography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#underwaterphotography</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/newzealand?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#newzealand</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/naturalhistory?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturalhistory</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/naturelover?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#naturelover</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/nznature?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#nznature</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/invertebrate?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#invertebrate</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/animals?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#animals</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/nature?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#nature</a> <a href="https://pixelfed.nz/discover/tags/wildlifeohotography?src=hash" class="u-url hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#wildlifeohotography</a>
