These days, when it rains heavily in Clear Lake, Houston, residents can rest easy.

But it wasn't always this way.

Previously, mops and buckets were essential as storm drains filled, causing disastrous flooding.

So, how did this change? 🤔

The Bright Side

In 2005, the Clear Lake Water Authority bought the land of an adjacent golf course, with a vision to create five massive detention ponds.

Each could hold 100 million gallons of stormwater! That's 750 Olympic-sized swimming pools! 🏊‍♂️

After six years of purchasing and two years of community input, Exploration Green came to life.

As of Fall 2023, this 200-acre nature reserve boasts five interconnected lakes, transforming former flooded plots into thriving green spaces.

🌳

It’s not just about flood control, though – this place includes walking trails and native plants, cultivated to create a habitat for wildlife.

Residents can now enjoy educational guided bird walks during events like Houston Bird Week! 🦅

This isn’t a unique story.

Many golf courses shutting down have been reimagined as serene natural environments.

With a drop in golf participation, thousands of acres are now primed for rewilding! 🌼
