I am so sick of these "AI is worse than climate change" takes. This one in particular claims AI will have a bigger impact than the climate crisis *in the next 2 years*.
For context, one estimate places total damage wrought by weather disasters in 2022 at $360 billion, and that the heat wave alone killed 40,000 people. As El Niño takes effect, that will no doubt get worse.
The worst part AI being dangerous is that it's just a marketing ploy to sell. "Our AI could end the world!!!!, API key's going for $50"
@bascule There needs to be an "in mice" rule for these headlines:
"Scientists cure disease... IN MICE."
"AI bigger than climate change... TO FORMER GOOGLE EXECS."
Like, yeah, I can see how AI might be a bigger threat to your Atherton property values, bro.
Also is that actually a picture of the guy, or is that how an image generator responded to the prompt "draw me an out-of-touch former Google exec"?
@bascule but her emails....
@bascule climate is world's top dire/urgent danger. democracy at #2. not worried about AI beyond if it will be used to make labor harder to make a living, or, automate much more propaganda and spam
