First I heard of them was when I was 13 and our maths teacher warned us not to set our scientific calculators to it accidentally when changing back from radians, with no further mention of what they were.

I later learned why they exist on a tear through wikipedia after learning about Renard numbers.

Most of these units seem less stupid to me if you give them a distinct name.
