From time to time I see people criticizing the concept of the "carbon footprint" and how it cannot be trusted, because it was supported by BP and other fossil fuel companies.
The reason why oil companies support such a concept is not because it is false or misleading. They support it, because they understand the basic feature of human psychology is to shift blame away from oneself.
An average person confronted with an idea that *they* are personally contributing to #ClimateChange with their choices will naturally look for ways to avoid that uncomfortable feeling. Some will dismiss climate change altogether ("humans can't change climate" or "it's not that bad"), while others will blame others (corporations, China, etc.) Only a small minority will reflect and change their behavior, i.e. their lifestyles and purchasing patterns.
And as long as people continue with their high-energy lifestyles profits will flow towards fossil fuel companies.
Sure, people will say in polls that they wish the corporations or their government would do more about climate change, but personally they are not willing to drive less, fly less or eat less meat. It's always someone else's responsibility.
@jackofalltrades we need help fighting the “pusher”.
Every football ad is for a monster truck or SUV, a processed food product, a vacation in Orlando, etc.
we shut down tobacco advertising which just kills people. Shouldn’t we follow through and cancel the planet killing ads?
@Aethelstan All ads are planet killing ads.
@jackofalltrades yes, in that anything contributing to overconsumption (which policy makers see as a strong consumer sector) is leading us away from #degrowth
