Make VoWiFi calls from an open source client using asterisk: osmocom.org/news/297 - osmocom main contributor @sysmocom has recently released a forked version of asterisk that can be used to make VoWiFi calls using nothing but FOSS, a smart card reader and a SIM card. #foss #opensource #telecom #3gpp

@osmocom @sysmocom this would seem massive news to me. I've never looked into buying a 4G device for myself, but now if 2G would stop working one day, I could just use a USB SIM reader and with any internet connection I could make and receive calls again?

This seems to be a complete game changer to have a mobile phone number without relying on any proprietary software. (Apart from what's running on the SIM.)

@jschwart @osmocom yes, all you'd need to make and receive calls is a SIM [of a cellular operator supporting VoWiFi], a smart card reader, internet connectivity, a Linux machine and Free Software.

@sysmocom @osmocom it's funny. I use a Sony Ericsson J120i and once received an SMS message "VoLTE has been activated". I couldn't imagine that to be relevant in any way to me at that time :)

I have some old USB SIM readers, so I might be able to try this. I played with Asterisk before too (mainly with ISDN and SIP). This is really amazing to see!!
