Among other things, Mastodon is methadone.
@paulg Mastodon is not a Twitter replacement, it's an alternative, with a different audience.
Currently, the audience consists of those whose bullshit meters are finely tuned.
@paulg Exactly, pretty much the same but not as toxic and not (quite) as addictive.
I had that thought a while ago (in German): https://mastodon.social/@bitbonk/109282032849739708
@paulg It's like when I switched from coffee with milk+sugar to black coffee. It's completely different and at first it was weired, but now I don't miss milk+sugar anymore - at all.
@paulg especially when you self host. There’s a nice stopping point when you stop seeing anything to read
@paulg Yeah, I'm still getting used to it
@paulg I can't believe you would write this sentence when Mastodone is right there for the taking!
@paulg I have to say that I’m Enjoying it way more because it is different. Seems like less crud and more content I am interested in.
@paulg Maybe for some. I started using Mastodon after not using any social media for a year, because I was excited about using a platform which is not an ad-funded walled garden and lets me connect with people. For me, Mastodon is RSS with replies.
@skr @paulg That's because you are not following anyone?
You should go to your favorite people, see who they follow, and follow those as well.
Take for instance @marcoarment and go see who he follows, if you like Mac and Apple, and follow everyone he does. It really makes a difference.
@paulg how much comment spam are you seeing in comparison?
@mknoszlig @paulg I'm not seeing spam at all, but I believe the reason behind this is because there is just a few users here...
Spam will becomes more aggressive when the number of users increases.
@paulg I suspect that if and when they unfuck Twitter, we'll all go back to heroin.
@paulg it’s like drinking a fruit smoothie that someone made for you vs. eating a fruit salad that you make yourself.
@paulg you should go back to twitter, you're not going to like it here
@paulg I like it here a lot more than on Twitter. People are respectful and polite, which is a nice change. It just takes a little getting used to the way everything functions.
@paulg one major reason - the top replies don’t show on the main feed yet. You can see the authors intent but the drama in any replies is buried.
@paulg Here are all of the news bots ICYMI https://hachyderm.io/@amart/109509253631548040
@GoldenRuleLover @paulg @paul @ivory Mastoot is really good free alternative, I feel it’s even better than the popular Toot! app
@paulg well as a newcomer, I like it, but I don't have any of my friends here, I feel like screaming into a black hole
@paulg is it novelty? Will it wear off when you spend a few days on it?
@paulg: "Among other things, Mastodon is methadone."
I was reading a book with larger-than-life characters in recovery on methadone, playing D&D. I had the same thought.
The spark of a biting or snappy idea, or the pick-me-up of being seen, these have pull on us. It's tough to walk away from people who have chosen to follow us - even if we know deep down that staying feeds a ghoulish beast. Our rationalizations come fast and strong.
It is time for #Mastodon, even if
#MastodonIsMethadone
