Wow , thanks for the help! I am genuinely surprised at how close the results were. It looks like the recommendation is to try out the ( and / or ) first - but only by 1.8% over ! Y'all must know that I've been getting frustrated with lately. I also appreciate the recommendations for other things to explore.

Now the question is Kbin or Lemmy? Or both? (any thoughts?)

@seanbala community wise, you can interact with either type from most #threadiverse instances. So usually your choices come down to which software you prefer, as well as a few other things.

Lemmy runs on most instances, has a federation model that boosts more by default, and has a lot of inertia already (as well as a lot of available third party clients). Some downsides are that it doesn't play well with many other fedisoftware that's not #threadiverse designed, and has certain quirks when interacting with instances not running Lemmy.
(There's also been concerns with the administration of the project and their political views, but that's orthogonal to what you'd be concerned with.)

Kbin is a bit of a fusion of a link aggregator and a microblog (Lemmy like + masto-like). You get potential federation with much more of the fediverse, better filtering, and boosting along with liking. Unfortunately it progresses a bit slower since the dev team is smaller (less integration+apps too…).

I say try both and see!

@seanbala I'd recommend Lemmy. I've found it overall easier to use than when I tried kbin, and the many apps for mobile and frontends for the website make it really nice to use in a way you like.

If you're signing up for Lemmy, I'd say don't sign up on these instances (for various reasons)

lemmy.ml
lemmygrad.ml
hexbear.net
beehaw.org

Kbin having microblogging features seems interesting, but you already have a mastodon account, so I guess (?) It wouldn't be too useful for you. Maybe your experience will be different from mine tho!

@NicoCharrua Thanks for the list. Do you have any suggestions of any good instances on Lemmy?

I'm probably going to try both but I have trouble wrapping my head around the microblogging + aggregator on Kbin. It just seems like it is a bit much.

@seanbala I use lemmy.ca. It's a Canadian instance, but welcome to all. It's relatively small while being big enough so you'll never run into size issues. The admins are active, the instance is well run, and there are plenty of resources like frontends and community requests.

I've also heard good things about lemm.ee and sh.itjust.works.

lemmy.caLemmy.ca - A Canadian-run community, geared towards Canadians, but all are welcome!

@seanbala The #kbin dev has finally returned and started updating again, so I'd give that one a shot. It combines micro-blogging with link aggregation. Best of both worlds!

I do use #lemmy however.

@seanbala I've spent a lot of time on /kbin - I prefer its UI over Lemmy's, plus it doesn't come with some of the controversies surrounding Lemmy's lead developers

Plus, it has support for both microblogging and threads, so you could theoretically use it for everything

@seanbala
kbin is your way to go > be prepared for bugs though: still in early beta mode, yet it works surprisingly well

@seanbala one more thing i really like about kbin: even with bad internet connection, kbin is still usable > when other fedi platforms such as mastodon etc would not work anymore, kbin still does what it is supposed to do :)
