I've started shopping for a smaller , preferably under 5K users. Starting to put together a spreadsheet of my favorites. What features are important to you? bit.ly/inst-sheet

@dan I really like how you've organized your instance, and the local topics discussed.

I'm considering migrating, but have a few questions that I wasn't able to find in your documentation...

@dan (2) Are your servers located in the US? Is content licensing (CC, copyright, etc.) up to the individual account?

J. J. Zepfanman.com @mas.to

@dan (3) Last question! What is the character limit for toots? Are there other features that you would highlight that are useful on your instance? Thanks in advance! /end

@zepfanman Sure, thanks for the questions! Some of these are things we are still figuring out -- this instance has only been around for a month!

1) No (not yet?). At the moment, I am paying for everything personally. I'm happy to keep doing that, but a few people have asked how they can contribute, and we will probably wind up setting something up especially if we continue to grow. No idea yet whether that will be OpenCollective or something else (though it certainly looks interesting! I like the focus on transparency.)

2) Yes, in the US (Azure's East US region to be specific), and yes -- we should state the latter explicitly somewhere.

3) We have a 5000 character limit which has been useful for some in-depth technical posts. Other than that, we're running a stock Mastodon v4 instance.

@dan
Thank you for taking the time to reply. I like the >500 limit. Not something I'd use often, but allows some flexibility instead of splitting up posts with footnotes, as people tend to do, this thread included 😉
