Dear #PhotoBubble would it be possible to *curb the hashtags* a little bit please?
For example, skip the hashtags for your hard- and software. It doesn't matter which camera you used, and which software.
That way, someone can post a question without it being drowned out by an endless stream of photos.
What I mean are hashtags such as: #Nikon #Lightroom #Sony #Fuji #Darktable #CaptureOne #Canon #Olympus #RawTherapee #Pixelmator #DxO etc. etc.
@alexskunz I've always wondered why people advertise that sort of thing with their photos. I assume it is in a quest for sponsorship, which some still seem to advertise as possible with this method ().
Even though I most likely never used such hashtags, I personally found them very helpful in the past when shopping for new gear, both hardware and software. By following hashtags, I could easily compare images taken with the R3 and Z8, or denoised with Topaz vs Adobe.
Sure, there are websites with comparisons, but social media’s advantage is the end user and real-life experiences.
One doesn’t have to understand something for it to be useful to others.
@RaffKarva I can kind of see that but you also have no idea what other sorts of things have been applied to the photo in order to be making a comparison of the base camera. More likely someone looking for info on a Nikon body or something will just get a wave of all sorts of photos instead. Maybe that is just how I use hashtags. :) @alexskunz
@RaffKarva it would be a miracle if the heavily compressed JPEG files on social media served as any indication of image quality or anything else but popularity. @michaelrussell

Thought the same recently
@alexskunz I suspect that many do it for the same reason in some web forums peoples signature list their gear. IMHO more often than not it’s about showing others what one has as a display of status. Likely happens on a subconscious level, but some actively don’t *want* to think about or be reminded of that. A few even get angry when “forced” to think about it.
The same happens with cars and many other things. People don’t get that “better kitchen equipment doesn’t make you a better cook”.
@alexskunz My camera gears capability still exceeds my own capabilities as a photographer. That’s in my opinion not a bad thing, quite the opposite: it allows me to improve my capabilities.
I’m a weird nerd though b/c while I like to discuss gear & technology in general as well as in a photographic context, I do separate that from talking about photography itself where possible. It’s one reason I rarely post photos here on mastodon.
@alexskunz thx. It should be about the photo, not the hashtags. Maybe limit it at least to only a few
