The Trump administration’s tariff calculation, annotated The original formula is: Δτᵢ = (xᵢ - mᵢ) / (ε*𝜑* mᵢ) Broken down: Δτᵢ is the change in tariff rate. The subscript “i”is a superfluous symbol which doesn’t impact the calculation, and won’t be mentioned from here on. x is a country’s exports to the US m is a country’s total imports to the US ε*𝜑 can be replaced with the constant 1 So in plain language: Reciprocal tariff = trade deficit / imports
