I recced my raptor monitoring area today which involved a very nice bimble on local but new-to-me paths. Plenty of buzzards and kites, though I need to work on corvid identification as I’m meant to be looking for ravens too.

Also, lots of sheep…and lambs. Yesterday’s fresh lambs were too far away to photograph today, but I met a very friendly ewe and lambs. She came running for a nose boop (alternatively was hoping for a biscuit).

I passed the time of day with a semi-retired farmer who was sitting out with his semi-retired sheepdog in the late-afternoon sunshine, having a cuppa. Both enjoying the peace and quiet. I asked if his sheep I could hear nearby were lambing. He said ‘any day now but not in this weather, they’ll wait until the wind and rain comes’, rolling his eyes.

@BashStKid yeah (to be fair, I’m usually hoping for a biscuit).

@helenclayton I think nothing is easy being a farmer. They toil in all weather.

@helenclayton aw this is lovely. and who doesn't want a biscuit?

@helenclayton Who knows, maybe in the faroff times, there were fewer predators hunting during windy rainy weather?

@quixote or as he said they do it to be ‘bloody difficult’.

@quixote @helenclayton
It’s logical, give the newbie time to be cleaned off, on their feet and suckled, then placenta disposed of and move away from the birth site before the first predators at dawn. Lambing night shift is always busy!

@helenclayton Ravens = wedge-shaped tail when flying

@Beedazzled @Sarah111well I was relying on identifying them by their call. Pretty sure I didn’t hear any.

@helenclayton @Sarah111well they have huge territories, which they stick to, so you don't see many, maybe 5 or 6 when they are feeding young.

@helenclayton @Beedazzled 😂 We have often laughed at what sounds like a duck up a tree. They make some daft noises!

@helenclayton Aww cuties! Thank you for blessing our feed with these delightful guests 😊

@helenclayton I would like a biscuit but I will settle for a nose boop

@purplepadma @helenclayton Many of us out here would be happy with either.

@purplepadma *boop*

I’d give you a biscuit too if I had one. 😊

@purplepadma @helenclayton on Saturday we were given this on the flight to Gibraltar (where we are now)

@helenclayton Ravens are best identified by their cronk call. They are big and more like flying crosses than other corvids.
Stonking birds, one of my favourites. Hope you find some.

@DavidjCrook ‘flying crosses’ is a good description! Thank you.
