Really sickening watching
Yvette Cooper interviewed by Kay Burley on Sky News earlier.
No, Yvette, asylum seekers are not "a problem that must be solved" or things that must be "processed", they are human beings who need our help, and who can also help us by making much-needed contributions to our economy.
Stop trying to out-Tory the Tories. First, you'll never be able to do that, and second, moving towards fascism is not a good look.
@statsguy
Sadly, it is probably the right approach in this situation. Labour have to be in POWER to even begin to do anything good. Once in power, the situation will quickly change. Politics can be a dirty game, but fighting fire with fire is sometimes the only way.
@kennethb That assumes that the British public are basically a bunch of racists. I'd like to believe that's not true.
@statsguy
So would I, but GMB this morning said that the majority of the messages they had received about immigrants were that they had to be stopped, by any means. That is what the fascists have done to us. Time to get frightened now. We have to get these bastards out NOW !
@kennethb It's not surprising when you have both major political parties telling them they have to be afraid of immigrants. If Labour had the courage to stand up and say something different, maybe some people would listen.
Also, not convinced GMB messages are from a random representative sample of the population.
@statsguy
Labour are saying it all the time, but holding back a little for obvious reasons. As to GMB, I am sure there are a lot of bots, but the fact that they said this on GMB will have influenced the seriously hard of thinking. Sadly, Labour even have to pander a little to those people too, for the time being. They cannot give any hostages to fortune with the toxic UK media that we have. Most people are not very bright and many are all-too easily led. Once in office, a fresh wind will blow.
@kennethb Well, that's even if they get into power. I'm not sure that trying to out-Tory the Tories is a great electoral strategy. People who like fascism can just vote Tory, and people who don't are likely to be put off voting Labour and will turn to the LDs or the Greens.
My working assumption right now is that the Tories are going to win the next GE.
@statsguy
They will. Trust me. Starmer is head and shoulders the best person to be PM for the foreseeable. As to the Tories winning, not a hope in hell. They are moribund now, and have alienated far to many groups. They are going down, but Labour cannot afford to let them have even a chink in the armour for now, because of what you suggest.
@kennethb Not sure about "not a hope in hell". 7/1, according to Ladbrokes.
