If you want to try PeerTube, the official PeerTube app IS NOT currently a good way to do it. Due to silly app store rules it is missing key features, and there are much better alternatives.

If you just want to watch and interact with PeerTube videos, it's easiest to do it from within Mastodon. For example try visiting @michellemay

If you prefer to use a PeerTube account, use your PeerTube server's website or web app. Here's how to install web apps: fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-a

@FediTips Does the f-droid version have the same problem?

@stemy

As far as I know yes:

f-droid.org/packages/org.frama

It still seems to be missing key features, perhaps because the app is mainly written with app stores in mind?

It will probably get better in the future as they add the features in, but it's been difficult for them due to the app store rules.

At the moment I'd strongly recommend the web app instead as it gives you all the features right now and totally avoids all the restrictions of app stores. I use it myself with my own instance.

@FediTips I'm using the app myself, and i think there are enough features to be usable, especially for dummies who are not able to understand a single word about decentralization, because believe me, the single concept of decentralization is enough to scare illectronic people away, so if this app allow them to use peertube without having to understand the concept of decentrlization, that's fine.

@stemy

I'm not saying it's unusable, I'm just saying it's not currently the best way of doing it 🙂

For example you can't sign in with your PeerTube account on the official app, which has caused a lot of confusion for some new people. Usually when there is an official app for a platform, you can sign in with your account on that platform.

This isn't the developers' fault, they are having to navigate some ridiculous rules on the app stores. That's why I recommend their web app instead.
