Tonight, ancient Athenians celebrated the festival of #Artemis of #Mounykhia. A she-goat dressed as a girl was sacrificed to the goddess and round cakes called amphiphontes (“shining all around”), in which little torches were stuck, were brought to her sanctuary by a procession on the night of the 16th Mounykhion.
The festival ended with a boat race by the ephebes, young men in military training, from the harbour of Peiraios to the harbour of Mounykhia.
