This Wednesday, organizers from Block Cop City will be doing a local teach-in at our co-op! Their presentation will include information on the history of the land The Atlanta Police Foundation is attempting to build on, a history of the movement to #StopCopCity, an outline of the movement's next phase #BlockCopCity, and a short workshop to help interested folks form affinity groups and participate in the November weekend of action. We hope you'll join us!

"Aside from bringing people to Atlanta, we hope to spread skills and creativity related to mass direct action and participatory, democratic mass organizing, strengthening the prospects for other, local struggles."—Block Cop City organizers

#BlockCopCity group issues call for mass action to stop construction

"The group says it plans to hold a 50-city tour in the runup to the mass action and then a convening in Atlanta beginning Nov. 10 and ending with the mass action at the construction site."
(...)
“It is useless to wait,” the landing page of the group’s website reads. “With our future on the line and the whole world watching, we’ll take a stand to bend the course of history. If the city government does not halt construction in order to listen to the people, then we will simply have to do it ourselves: a People’s Stop Work Order.”

Looks like there's yet another bank trying to bail out the Atlanta Police Foundation's heinous #CopCity project. This is bad news - but it also shows that the APF is desperate for money, so the more we cut off their sources the closer we are to winning. Call these bank officials and put some pressure on them! Make it politically unviable for them to support Cop City! There are literally so many better ways to use that kind of money.

Today, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Michael Register announced that he is stepping down, being demoted to a job in Cobb County. Michael Register took over as the GBI Director last August. He has presided over controversial efforts to frame forest defenders and abolitionists as "domestic terrorists," doling out blanket terrorism charges for as little as sitting in a tree or posting on social media. Working with GBI in January, Georgia State Patrol killed forest defender Manuel Teran, known as Tortuguita, and GBI hastened to cover up the circumstances of the murder.

Yet this sadistic authoritarianism has not secured Michael Register the prestigious career he desired.

In addition, the Dekalb County District Attorney has withdrawn from 42 cases involving people accused of participating in the efforts to #StopCopCity. The Georgia state Attorney General is still pursuing the charges.

This shows that fractures are finally opening up in the halls of power between Republicans and Democrats over how aggressively to prosecute those who protest against channeling a vast proportion of public resources into police militarization.

Ahead of the sixth week of action against a proposed police training facility in Atlanta, this analysis explores the strategic challenges facing the movement to stop Cop City, chronicling the actions of the movement and the reactions of the authorities throughout 2023.

In setting out to stop the militarization of police, people in Atlanta are taking on an institution that has become increasingly central to governance, soaking up more and more resources of society as a whole. This is an important document of one of the fiercest struggles of the Biden era, exploring questions that will soon become pressing everywhere.
