beige.partyRage Rumbles 🏴‍☠️ 🏳️‍🌈 (@Black_Flag@beige.party)THINKING THE UNTHINKABLE In these times of increasing political instability and increasing corporate power grabs, with a few billionaire bozos to also add into the mix, it seems to me it would pay us well to start considering questions we might not have asked before. It is the unreflective assumption of many that things will always go on as they always have but in times like these that is a dangerous and maybe fatal assumption. The wise imagine what could happen rather than merely observing what is happening. So I wonder: 1. What would you do if your water supply failed? 2. What would you do if the shops closed? 3. What would you do if your bank account stopped working? 4. What would you do if a publicly infectious disease broke out? 5. What steps do you have in place for being able to survive, perhaps for weeks, without recourse to public resources? 6. What would you do if the power failed? 7. If you got injured but the hospital wouldn't accept you what would you do? These, and other, questions are ones you might want to think about in a time when governments all over the place are going rogue or simply being taken over by ideologues. It makes sense to build some resilience into your living situation or have some kind of idea for what to do in an emergency. And the time to think about that is before it happens rather than when it's too late. #politics #resilience #resistance

What to put in your "go bag" for a fire or other emergency evacuation

Story by Matthew Rodriguez, January 7, 2025

What is a go bag?

"An emergency supply kit or go bag is typically a backpack filled with the essentials and personal documents. Cal Fire recommends everyone have their kit ready before a wildfire or disaster to ensure a quick evacuation and contain everything someone would need for an extended stay away from their home.

Go bags should contain the following:

- A 3-day supply of non-perishable food & 3 gallons of water per person
- A map with at least 2 evacuation routes
- Necessary prescriptions or medications
- A change of clothes & extra eyeglasses/contact lenses
- Extra car keys, credit cards, cash, or traveler's checks
- A first aid kit & sanitation supplies
- A flashlight & battery-powered radio with extra batteries

Also, ensure the pack contains any copies of important documents, including birth certificates, passports, IDs, etc."

Given the unfolding experiences of the #Jasper #AB #wildfire #evacuees--where they are just the most recent of many displaced people seeking urgent help and resources are insufficient--I strongly suspect we need to massively expand #EmergencyPlanning and #EmergencyResources for the present and 'new normal' of the foreseeable future.

We have a LOT to do.

Are those who are responsible for #EmergencyPlanning and #EvacuationOrders taking these issues into consideration? Do offline (print) materials exist? Multi-lingual translation of emergency information?

And this is not even to mention another group of folks that might be local or visiting: #ActuallyDisabled people. Are basic #accessibility features such as ramps available in evacuation centres? Emergency Rx or medical equipment support?

11. Do tourists know about or have access to apps such as the AEA, Alberta Emergency Alert App?

After the AEA stopped pushing updates about the #Jasper #AB #EvacuationOrder, people were directed to Jasper's #Facebook page.

I'm Albertan and have not used FB. Is it reasonable that during an emergency, evacuees need to make accounts and navigate unfamiliar, general-purpose apps just to find out how to stay alive?

A few of things about the current emergency (as of June 24, 2024) in #Jasper, #Alberta:

Note: I am in #Edmonton, ~5 hours west, 'watching' at a distance.

1. On the surface, the Jasper #evacuation could seem similar to that of #FortMcMurray #ymm eight years ago (2016). Some similarities include limited highway options for egress and the entire population needing to leave at the same time.

Today has been all about #GIS and its intersection with #hazardmitigation and #disaster #preparedness. I firmly believe that we need to resist the urge to be "all maps and no substance," but I'm just as firm in my belief that there are few better ways than a well-designed map to support a narrative discussion.

Think about the ways a map can tell your risk story differently than text or photos.
