Heute haben unsere #MPIM Wissenschaftler:innen Martin Claußen, Lara Wallberg und Julian Krüger im Rahmen der Forschungsreise im Klimahaus Bremerhaven Einblicke in ihre Forschung gegeben. 🌍

❄️Between the last glacial maximum & today, humans were exposed to severely rising sea levels 🌊 & recurrent phases of strong abrupt cooling events.🥶 #MPIM researchers have uncovered the origin of these strong temperature fluctuations over the past 20,000 years using a novel coupled climate-ice sheet model. They found that #iceberg armadas 🧊🧊🧊 & changed river courses were responsible for #AMOC weakening & abrupt cooling.

Over the past 50 years, our institute #MPIM was lead by several brilliant directors. Through their personal expertise and interests, and by leading and enabling excellent researchers, each new director has made the institute what it is today: one of the most renowned institutes for climate research in the world. 🌍 ☁️☀️🌊🏔️

A #teleconnection originating in the Southern Ocean 🌊❄️is causing #EastAsia to face wetter summers and the western #USA wetter winters in the future.🌧️ An international team of researchers including #MPIM director Sarah Kang breaks down the process chain for the first time & provides an explanation for the uncertainty of previous model projections.🌏 They also point out that this long-term consequence of #ClimateChange must be taken into account in #adaptation strategies! 📖 nature.com/articles/s41561-025

Want to turn your research idea into a funded project with expert support? 🌍✍️

The #MPIM Incubator Program offers short, funded research stays (2 weeks–3 months) to help postdocs develop top-notch #proposals (Humboldt, MSCA, ERC & more) in an outstanding scientific environment.

Join us at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology & take your project idea to the next level.

🌏 #ClimateScience has correctly predicted many aspects of global warming.🌡️ However, regional #ClimateChange poses a challenge. Discrepancies between the real world & our expectations have emerged. At the same time, disruptive #technologies have become available. 🧠 Tiffany Shaw (U Chicago) & #MPIM director Bjorn Stevens provide an interpretation for the situation 💡suggesting the field is evolving & that embracing discrepancies is a key path forward. ➡ mpimet.mpg.de/en/communication

👩🏼‍💻 #MPIM's 1st #supercomputer, a CDC Cyber-205, was installed in Hamburg's Geomatikum in 1985. 2.5 yrs later, the German Climate Computing Center #DKRZ was established as a service facility for climate research in Germany. Continuous upgrades enabled substantial progress in the development of realistic #climate models. Today, scientists from #MPIM &other institutes are using the Levante supercomputer, which has 70 million times the computing power of the Cyber-205! #MPIM50 #ThrowbackThursday #tbt

🤓🌏 From Australia to Brazil, from the UK to Japan – scientists from all around the world will participate in the World Climate Research Programme #WCRP Global km-Scale #Hackathon from May 12–16. The event entails a week of writing code & analyzing data to advance #ClimateModeling – and the best part is: you don’t even have to travel far, since it is happening at the same time in several places around the globe. So why don’t you join us in #Hamburg at #MPIM? 👉 digital-earths-global-hackatho

🌱🌎 Yesterday, #climate & #sustainability researchers from Asia, Africa, South & Central America visited #MPIM &#DKRZ. The meeting was part of a Germany trip in the scope of the introductory seminar for the @HumboldtStiftung's #ClimateProtection Fellows.👩‍🎓👨‍🎓 #MPI_scientists presented selected aspects of climate research at our institute. At DKRZ, the visitors enjoyed a tour of the supercomputer. It was a pleasure having them here! ✨

🌊🪣 In 1979, #MPIM researchers conducted hands-on research in the North Sea: #ocean-atmosphere measurements for the calibration of satellites 🛰️& to study exchange processes. 🌍⛴️🛟 Today, observations–by ship, aircraft, or on land–are still a core component of our research. We also use data from the automated PIRATA surface buoy array in the tropical Atlantic, one of which can be seen in the right image. 🛜

🎂🎉Today, Hartmut Graßl, former director at #MPIM and professor at the University of Hamburg (#UHH), is celebrating his 85th birthday. Our Managing Director Jochem Marotzke cordially congratulated him on behalf of the entire institute. 💬 "Graßl has not only shaped our institute and climate research – he has also strongly promoted knowledge about climate change in the public and in politics,” he said. The Social Media Team would like to add their best wishes, too! Happy #birthday! #anniversary

👨‍🎓At the opening of the #MPIM on 5 Dec, 1975, founding director Klaus Hasselmann outlined the research program, which included the development of #climate models.🌍 Half a century later, participants of the #Hamburg #Hackathon were working on 2 of the most advanced km-scale Earth system models using supercomputers #HPC. And climate modeling at our institute has become a truly international endeavor. #ThrowbackThursday #tbt #MPIM50 @nextgems_eu

☁️ Airborne #microplastics: Where do they come from, where do they go?🤔
These are important questions, as airborne microplastics are a potential health threat. 😷 Using a global chemical transport model, #MPIM researchers Shanye Yang, Guy Brasseur et al. provide evidence that, contrary to previous claims, the ocean 🌊 is not a major source of microplastics to the atmosphere, but a significant sink!
