One of the lies #fairytales told us was how the #monarchy functioned. He's an all powerful dictator that most people just do what he says, never mind that he's propped up by lords and nobles below him he has to maneuver politically with and keep contented.
Even #Aladdin got this wrong, "Am I #Sultan or am I Sultan? From now on the princess may choose whoever she deems worthy" Um hold on one second my dude, pretty sure you have to get the approval of the lords and they will certainly not like some street rat pouching a top position of power they could have just because the princess decides she's horny for him.

The SublimePorte was a very specific diplomatic arena. The presence of #emdiplomats there increased significantly between the 16th and 18th century. During this time, European views of the #OttomanEmpire changed, redefining the sultan’s realm from a dangerous and largely unknown imperium to a potential ally with attractive cultural trademarks. The European representatives and diplomatic outposts in #Constantinople remained important political links to the outside world for the #sultan

Following the pioneering example of medieval #Venice, several European states created a permanent diplomatic outpost at the sultan’s #court, as Zsuzsanna Cziráki outlined in her article on the #SublimePorte as a sphere of diplomatic interaction:

#OttomanEmpire - 1

When the #Turks conquered #Arabia, #Arabs lost their religious #Caliphate to #Turkish Sultans, who merged powers of #Sultan and #Caliph

For 400 years before the #GreatWar #WWI, #Palestinians were under despotic Ottoman #occupation, subject to onerous #TurkishYoke

For 4 centuries, occupation was NOT an issue

End of WWI finally brought independence to Arabs (WWII for Palestinians), but they turned that #independence into #grievance against #Jewish presence in #MiddleEast

Impetus for #Kitchener's desire to "capture #Islam" in #MiddleEast in #WWI was rooted in his inability to understand that #societiesAreNotHomogenous.

There was a time when Britain ruled over half of world's #muslims in #Africa & #India, and Kitchener believed Islam as a homogenous, single centralized entity controlled by the #Caliph#Mohammad's successor.

This perception probably grew out of the fact that #Turkish #Sultan had immense sway over muslims far away in India.
