Soccer Saga #2:

In my late-20s, I played in a regular pick-up soccer game in San Francisco’s Mission District, near the Army Street housing project (which no longer exists). This was during the early 90s, when there was still a lot of gang activity in the neighborhood. One time, a gang (Sureños, I believe), calmly marched onto our field in the middle of a game. We just stopped playing and moved to the sidelines. The gangsters proceeded to empty their pockets of all their weapons, leaving them in a pile in the corner of the park. There were handguns, knives, nun chucks, brass knuckles, and a machete. One of them stood guard over the pile of weapons, while the others moved to the center of our soccer pitch. They formed a circle, with one young man standing in the center, and another standing outside the circle with a stop watch. When the timekeeper said, “Start,” the boy in the middle started swinging his fists around and around in front of his face, as fast as he could, turning his body in circles, in anticipation of the beating that was about to come. The others then proceeded to viciously punch and kick him in the head, face, and abdomen until the timekeeper called “stop,” a couple of minutes later. Then they all walked off the pitch, just as calmly as they had entered, retrieved their weapons, and left. It was horrifying and surreal. But we resumed our game as if nothing had happened. Just another day in La Mission. Oh, and burritos back then were only $3, with a free bag of tortilla chips, and multiple containers of free salsa. And you could still find 3–4-bedroom flats for less than $1500/month.

Kids had separate swim meets today, so the boy and I were on our own for lunch. We decided on steak burritos. It's one of the few meals that I am better than my wife at, but only because I know how to roll them.
