Pavel Fantl, Das Lied Ist Aus (The Song Is Over), 1941–44

Prague doctor Pavel Fantl, later murdered along with his son and wife, had contact with the Czech police guarding the camp in Terezín. Through them, he obtained painting supplies and learned what was happening in the outside world. When Pavel Fantl was deported to Auschwitz, a Czech railway worker smuggled approximately 80 of the artist's works from their hiding place in the #ghetto.

Artworks created in the face of indescribable arbitrariness were, above all, a means of self-affirmation as human beings. They document resistance against the Nazi dehumanization of their victims. This colored drawing by the Prague doctor Pavel Fantl is all the more astonishing. It depicts Adolf Hitler as a pathetic clown. Blood drips from his hands. The instrument on which he played his violent melodies lies on the floor with its strings broken. The secretly created drawing expresses a deep longing and is simultaneously a prediction: "The song is over," Fantl wrote in Czech beneath his work. This testifies to the painter's fearlessness and defiant humor. Pavel Fantl, who was later murdered along with his son Tomas and his wife Marie, had contact with the Czech police guarding the camp in Terezín. Through them, he obtained painting supplies and learned what was happening in the outside world. When Pavel Fantl was deported to Auschwitz, a Czech railway worker smuggled approximately 80 of the artist's works from their hiding place in the ghetto and concealed them in the walls of his apartment until the end of the war.
