Sehr vertraut sind diese bürgerlichen Gestalten, die die personifizierte Scheinheiligkeit zu sein scheinen, die (vor allem zu sich selbst) unehrlich sind und sich aus Überheblichkeit dem Abgründigen nicht stellen, es nur im Verborgenen zulassen. Es sind wahrscheinlich die Überbleibsel des Nationalsozialismus und prinzipiell das Autoritäre, das hier den Boden vor Menschen und zwischen Generationen aufgehen lässt, das nichts anderes als zwischenmenschliche Kälte ermöglicht. Es mag nicht so filigran, so vielschichtig beobachtet und ausformuliert sein wie in folgenden Werken. Aber es ist bereits alles angelegt und zeugt

Haneke's examination of how the entire generation of people can be capable of atrocity or turn the blind eye to it is as complex as the history it is contextualizing. There are definitely the economical disparity and religious hypocrisy at play in The White Ribbon. But what's most striking in the film is the attitude of grown ups not accepting the possibility of 'innocence' not existing. It is chilling because this view can be applied to any time period. #michaelhaneke #austriancinema
