The wetlands of West Bengal in eastern India are one of the country’s best habitats for the fishing cat, a species vulnerable to extinction. But a significant population of these fish-eating, mid-sized wildcats lives outside protected areas, putting them at high risk of road accidents and retaliatory killing, reports contributor Nabarun Guha for Mongabay India.

Great egret (Ardea alba) - in flight above Sir Joseph Banks Park, on the northern edge of Botany Bay in Sydney.

One wonders why so many types of egret evolved to be white. Apparently white feathers are also less durable than darker-coloured feathers.

Now THAT is a great egret. Yellow beak, black legs and feet, strange kink in the neck and the gape extends behind the eyes.

A roe deer I spotted amongst the autumn trees while on this morning's weekend dog walk at Lang Craigs. I love that Glasgow has wild areas like this within such easy reach of the city.

This creepy decor is all in good fun, of course. But for our nonhuman neighbors some of these decorations can be terrifying.

Imagine you're a hummingbird, flitting around, sipping nectar and gobbling up insects. You stop on a tree branch to rest your tiny wings, but the branches are festooned with sticky white fibers and you're stuck as surely as a fly in an orb weaver’s web.

A lizard my kids found in a tree at the park. My daughter took this picture while swaying on a thin branch two metres from the ground, so it's not the crispest photo, but I believe this is a frill-necked lizard. Do they climb? Maybe a tree dragon of some sort?
Edit: this is far north Queensland, near Cairns.
